Haven't we all suffered from a depression and anxiety disorder at some level, and at some stage
in our lives?



Whether a depression and anxiety disorder has been something that lasts for a few moments and is relatively mild, or months and even years of deep depression and debilitating anxiety, this can have far reaching effects.

My goal in writing about depression and anxiety disorder is to help women find practical solutions to this incapacitating ailment. Many websites are full of information about why and what we may be experiencing, or perhaps pills and potions, where as I want to help with realistic Do-It-Yourself solutions.

What about the causes? Well, causes have been extremely well researched and documented over the years and myriad reasons are recognized. Whilst it is good to know about the possible and likely causes and effects, it is the solutions to the depression and anxiety disorder that I would like to focus on.

As someone who has been confronted by numerous demanding life challenges that have resulted in varying degrees of depression and anxiety, and have seen friends and family also meet the test of a depression and anxiety disorder, I have found that doing something positive and taking a different action than one would normally, a little bit at a time, is key to combating and dealing with depression and dealing with anxiety.

Conquering a depression and anxiety disorder is best achieved by making even one tiny step, every day, to overcome the "inertia factor". The worst thing about a depression and anxiety disorder is the sense of inability to do anything to help yourself. It's like a form of mental paralysis. To overcome this ‘inertia’, do something DIFFERENT, as the way to change the pattern of a problem is to break the pattern. When you experience the problem, take notice of what you usually do when this happens or you get these feelings and do it differently. It doesn’t have to be hard, just different.

Make it fun – and in small steps. You know the old saying of ‘getting out of the wrong side of the bed’? Well, if you wake up feeling out of sorts, do just that - get out of bed on the other side! Instead of crawling out of the usual side of your bed, throw back the covers and make your start to the day by rolling over to the other side and plant your feet on the floor. Start your day differently!

Trouble Sleeping?

If you have trouble sleeping and usually just lie there hoping you will ‘drop off’, try reading something inspirational before you go to sleep – or listen to some relaxing music. (Use earphones if you think you will disturb the person you sleep with)

What about getting up in the morning?

Is that a challenge? For me, the time lying in bed with time to think, aids the dread of getting out of bed. Make a deal with yourself to get out of bed the minute you wake and if you can take yourself for a walk or do some gentle exercise, you will be amazed at the difference it will make to the way you feel. If you can’t walk or exercise, just DO something. Don’t allow yourself that time to lie in bed and worry about and anticipate all the things that could possible go wrong or that you have to do.

Do you argue with your spouse when he gets home?

Make a deal to hold off any discussions until he has had a shower and changed. Changing the sequence of doing things can help dissolve the need to get into an argument.

Another great way to feel better about yourself and doing something different and simple, is to acknowledge all the things you are grateful for. This can be hard when you may feel that there really isn’t anything good about your life. Look around you. Aren’t youu grateful that you have a bed to sleep in and a roof over your head? What about the fact that the sun is shining today and the trees really do look beautiful on this cool autumn day. And that one friend who came by and had a coffee with you yesterday and just listened?

I know that you can think of many things to be grateful for even if you don’t think of them until you really put you mind to it.
